// From the Campine region to the coast, villages in Flanders are rapidly transforming. A wave of apartment buildings is rolling across the country, representing an ever increasing proportion of the housing stock even in small village centers. The residential quality in and around such buildings projects is disappearing. Individual architectural projects however can make a difference, as they offer opportunities to enhance or improve life in and the built form of the village center. Architecture can be generous while also being comfortable, future-proof and affordable. Drawing from several examples of recent multifamily housing projects in villages, this toolbox offers a new language and dialoguing practice in order to grasp what constitutes architectural quality at the village scale.
This publication is the result of practice based PhD research of Ward Verbakel, master students thesis projects and the Campine Lab of Ar-Tur.
